Making sure your ladder is secure before you ascend it is one of the most important checks to do. Even if someone tells you the ladder is secure, you should still check it for yourself. You may not see the importance of securing your ladder if you are not going up very high, however, many fatalities that have resulted from accidents on a ladder have taken place from a height of 10 feet or less.
It's dangerous to be overly relaxed or too confident on a ladder, especially as you are nearing the ground. Never skip rungs and be careful to avoid overreaching. This can happen if you are doing a task such as putting up string lights, which requires you to constantly ascend and descend the ladder just to move it over a tiny amount.
Another thing you should avoid is positioning your ladder in a doorway. If you have no option but to do so, make sure the door is locked and that anyone in the home knows what you are doing. It's also important not to use the ladder for anything other than its intended use such as shelving or a ramp.
You can never be too careful when it comes to safety in the home and using your ladder is no exception.
